My Final project

Posted by on May 22, 2008  |  No Comments

We were asked to do something student or Limkokwing related and so I came up with a simple (or perhaps not so simple considering that I find it hard to do) scheduling system. It aims to match students and tutors for extra classes based on the subjects and the time slots.

Seems rather boring eh? Well, I hope the lecturers like it. Most other students are doing some sort of Asset Tracking Software like an inventory, or a student portal so I think my project will stand out.

Do you know how dangerous it can be to pay your bills – particularly in restaurants – where the waiter takes your card away to swipe it at the cashier?

Imagine this scenario, the waiter takes your card to the cashier. He then proceeds to write down the information on your card – name, number, expiry date and most importantly, those three digits at the back. He then swipes your card to pay the bill, then gives it back. Using that information, he can then pretend to be you and go and a major shopping spree online.

Yes! This has happened. Try google it if you don’t believe me. In worst case scenarios the culprit steals your whole identity and does scrupulous things. Scary isn’t it? We’re lucky its not really prevalent here in Malaysia or we would have to start looking for companies like lifelock.

I think the best course of action is avoid paying your restaurant check by credit card, use cash. That way you can both save yourself from debt and also the risk of having your identity stolen

Sorry, I’m not working

Did you realize that when you go to any Petronas petrol station there is always someone who will approach you asking you if you want to sign up for credit cards that offer a rebate on your petrol.

Once this guy approached me and I just brushed him off by saying, “Sorry, I’m not working yet. I’m just a student.” However, just 5 seconds after that I whipped out my supplementary card (that is under my mom’s credit card) and proceeded to fill my car with petrol.

Needless to say, the salesman was standing behind me and giving me the ‘evil eye’ and glaring. I didn’t bother to explain though. Oh well, at least I’m not lying.

Review : Prince Caspian

Posted by on May 17, 2008  |  4 Comments

The Chronicles of Narnia : Prince Caspian starts of some 1300 years after the Golden Age of Narnia where the Narnians were prosperous. Telmarines invaded Narnia and is now controlled by the evil King Miraz, who took the throne from the rightful owner Prince Caspian.

This movie – adapted from the 2nd book ‘The Chronicles of Narnia’ written by C.S. Lewis – was more entertaining then the first. I thought the first was kinda draggy but this second movie was a good blend of good storytelling, action filled sword fighting and heartwarming scenes. I won’t say that its the best movie I watched, but its not bad :)

Bring the family, but make sure your stupid kid doesn’t kick the back of the chair in front. We were sitting in cineleisure’s couple seat when this couple sat behind us with a small kid who was noisy and kept kicking both of our chairs. The noise I understand, but the kicking? WTF! I even asked you to please stop but soon after that she started kicking again.

Video:Here in my Home

Posted by on May 16, 2008  |  No Comments

Taken from Yasmin Ahmad’s blog,

On the 24th of April, 2008, about 100 volunteers gathered at KLPAC and made a video about being One People in a nation of many.
The song, “Here In My Home”, was written by Pete Teo. The music video is officially described as having been directed by Ho Yuhang and Yasmin Ahmad, but in truth, the celebrities who had come forth to offer their time and energy for free, pretty much directed themselves.
Yuhang and I knew, at the very onset of the project, that we did not want fancy camera moves or graphics that would have brought attention upon themselves. (Music videos have a habit of doing just that!)
We figured that when you have charismatic people like

and all those other wonderful personalities singing and dancing to a beautiful song, the best thing to do was to keep everything constant. A mostly un-moving camera, lots of space for people to run around in, and a flat coloured location.
So in the end, what you’ll see are Stars in their element.

The result is an awesome song and music video in collaboration with a lot of artists and personalities singing along to this heartwarming song. Enjoy!

Quick update

Wow! I didn’t realize its been almost a week since I last updated about the Speed Racer movie. Well, things have been kinda hectic here.

My parents are away for about a week (Sunday to Thursday) so it has been kinda kelam kabut in the house. I do most of the cleaning. Somehow my sister (this is her own words) “did not see” the 5 plastic bags of rubbish I put outside the door for her to throw away. And my mom gave her the money for groceries and somehow she finished it in 2-3 days.

Also, next week is week free for me for most of my subjects BUT i have to complete all my projects in two weeks so if have problems with it I should be meeting with my lect next week. That means, TWO weeks to complete everything. *sigh*

So yea, wont be able to update as often. But I’ll try :)

On another note, I made chocolate spritz cookies using my new cookie press. Fun and quite nice also. Recipe @ Zestful Eats.

A few more weeks

Posted by on May 15, 2008  |  No Comments

I can’t believe its going to be three to four weeks before I will be done with my degree. I would so love to take time to travel. I have my Sabah trip lined up in early July. Bought the tickets ages ago.

But, I’m really hoping that I can make it to Jakarta early June but I might not be able to because I’m still not sure when’s my exams. Its going to be a family trip (which we could afford flights to USA but Indonesia would do).

Its been a while since I’ve been there. Lots of new shopping malls there and I love all the little quaint ‘pasar malam’ (night market) with lots of stalls and really cheap stuff.

Now if only my lecturer can get back to me on the exact date of our paper. Hurm.

Review : Speed Racer (no spoilers)

speedracer_tracks

Thanks to Fly FM’s Night Flight, I won four free tickets to watch Speed Racer at GSC, One Utama just now. So I brought along Aree, Pam and Jazzy (but Jazzy couldn’t make it and the bf is sick). The movie started at 9pm but we went in a bit late coz we had dinner at Zuup first (their New England Clam Chowder is to die for).

Synopsis from Yahoo! Movies : To Speed Racer, nothing says “family values” like barreling down a racetrack at face-flattening speeds. So when mega-mogul Royalton offers the young driver a corporate sponsorship, Speed turns him down. An enraged Royalton tells Speed he’ll never win a race again, and he’ll send ninjas after Speed to insure it. It’s up to Speed, his best girl Trixie in her pink helicopter, and the enigmatic and brilliant Racer X to ensure Speed’s victory in “The Crucible”: the same perilous cross-country free-for-all that killed his brother. Will Speed follow in his big bro’s tire tracks?

At first, I didn’t really have high expectations for this movie because I read a review somewhere that it wasn’t so good and I never did like racing cars stories. Plus, comic/cartoon series based movies sometimes are a flop.

However, Speed Racer blew me away. Directed by Larry Wachowski and Andy Wachowski, the same people who brought The Matrix, it was a fast paced flashy movie combining well known and loved characters with a good story and fantastic effects. Not to mention a good lineup of actors and actresses namely, Emile Hirsch, Susan Sarandon, John Goodman, Christina Ricci, Matthew Fox, Kick Gurry.

Edit : Oh yea, i forgot to mention that it’s Rain’s Hollywood debut as well. Rain (whose real name is Jung Ji Hoon) is a South Korean singer/actor. Rain’s role is a Japanese driver who teamed up with Speed Racer and Racer X to race in the Crucible – like an underground race thats very dangerous and full of cheating contestants. KInda weird how they never mentioned him in the synopsis tho.

I loved how they combined comic book/cartoon style drawings with real life. Its really like reading a comic book with the characters having flashbacks and when the hero looks at the heroin, the background becomes blurry with colourful hearts. LOL! The CGI of the racetracks and scenes were also fantastic. Not too outrageous that it looks so fake (like most Malaysian movies attempts at CGI) but very creative.

All in all, great movie, good storyline and plot (I think aree felt like crying at some point) and superb cast – like the very yummylicious Matthew Fox and cute, adorable rain. :X

p/s: Jules of FlyFm asked if it was the movie with the talking dog. Well there isn’t any talking dog but there is a cute monkey.
