Yasmin Ahmad, acclaimed Malaysian director, passed away :(

July 26, 2009 | Movies, Musings, News, Women

Yasmin Ahmad is the critically-acclaimed multi-award winning film director, writer and scriptwriter from Malaysia and is also the executive creative director at Leo Burnett Kuala Lumpur. Her television commercials and films are well-known in Malaysia for their humour, heart and love that crosses cross-cultural barriers, in particular her ads for Petronas, the national oil and gas company.

Her movies, Rabun, Sepet, Gubra, Mukhsin, Muallaf & Talentime have won multiple awards internationally. Unfortunately due to our censorship board, some of them are not aired here in Malaysia. Even if they are, they are heavily cut :/

She was admitted to Damansara Specialist Center on Thursday (23 July 2009) and was in a critical condition after surgery for a brain haemorrhage. And today (26 July) she passed away just a few hours ago.

I was following her blog at yasminthestoryteller.blogspot.com before she moved to a second blog here. Her movies are all entertaining, heartwarming and inspiring. The last time I saw Yasmin Ahmad was at an Event for Talentime. She looked so happy then.

Malaysia has lost one of its most creative and inspiring minds. Yasmin, may you rest in peace. :’(

you know, i was at TEDxKL (refer to my article) and she was the FIRST SPEAKER! but i missed her session due to some difficulty locating the venue. :(

some said her session was the best. :)

Well, regardless – she’s one person M’sia should be proud of, making movies that show the world what M’sians can do.

I loved Sepet. With most of the local productions here barely passing for crap, she changed my view of local directors.

It came so surprisingly. But she must have passed away in peace knowing she had so many supporters.
