Merdeka is here. Call me cynical and non patriotic, but the only thing I like about it is that its a public holiday. And this year its on a monday, which makes it better.
So why don’t I get into all the Merdeka hype? My post back in 2007 explains it :
About this merdeka thingy, dont you think its rather overrated? no actually overrated is not the word. Its more like ‘pretentious’.
I mean, ok you love your country yea? So at the end of august – Merdeka week – you stick a hundred flags on your car, put a huge flag on your hood (of the car), hang a flag in your front gate (if you stay in a house) or outside your window (if u stay in a flat), you go down to the dataran merdeka and scream and shout and wave the little flags, you sing along to songs like “Tanggal 31″ and “Jalur Gemilang” when it plays on the radio and TV and you do all sorts of patriotic things.
Then, 2-3 days later, everything goes back to normal. Then all sorts of complaints/talks come out:
* In the jam – “why cant they build better roads/highways/tolls/tunnels”
* When fuel/toll/commodities prices go up – “why the govnt only want to take our money?”
* While reading political scandals in the paper – “oh so and so is mmg like that..did you know that he/she *gossip gossip* “
* More examples which I dont even hv to mentionWhat happened to the “I love malaysia”? What happen to the “im proud to be malaysian”? What happened to the “negaraku, tanah tumpahnya darahku” – my country, the place where I would willingly spill my blood i.e. strive for, fight for.
What really happens during the other 51 weeks in the year?
Anyway, Happy birthday Malaysia (tho its actually supposed to be 16 Sept)

First of all, thanks so much to Clarins and Miu of Plusizekitten for organizing this workshop. It was held at Amoda near Bukit Bintang. Well I misread the map that Miu posted, thinking that the red building is Amoda but apparently its the other side. So I was a bit late. Heh, sorry!
*pics are all courtesy of Miu. I didn’t bring a camera. Yea i know, what kinda blogger doesn’t bring a camera for events right? But my camera batt died on me :(*

Clarins headquarters is very inviting and so fresh. I really like how they took care of all the participants and even providing refreshments – chocolates, chrysanthemum tea, fruit tarts, tuna croissants, etc.
The workshop area is also very nice, slightly bigger would be better so that we can mingle around comfortably. Ample mirrors and product was provided to everyone. Some people came really prepared with no makeup and even hairbands to tie back their hair. Well it was my first time at a skincare workshop.
This was the box of products available for our use. First I used the Gentle Eye makeup remover to remove my makeup. Then I used the Cleansing Milk with Alpine Herbs (for Normal/Dry Skin). Did you know there’s a proper way to wash your face? And that is from the middle of your forehead and ur nose outwards to your cheeks and chin. Clarins also taught us how to use our palms to create a ’suction’ affect to help draw out the impurities.

11 Aug – Primeworks Studios and a group of cinema operators are coming together to honour the memory of the late film director Yasmin Ahmad by organising a re-screening of her latest movie "Talentime" on 13 August 2009 onwards, for a limited time only. The screening will be held across various cinemas nationwide and the organisers have pledged to donate RM1 to an undisclosed charity organisation for every movie ticket sold.
"Yasmin Ahmad was an icon of our film industry who will be sorely missed, and this is our way of honouring her memory and allowing viewers to enjoy her work on the big screen once again," said Dato’ Sri Farid Ridzuan, Media Prima Berhad’s Group CEO Television Networks. "Those who missed it will now have a chance to catch it, while those who have watched it before are welcome to come along again to join us in remembering her while contributing to charity."
"Talentime" will screen at:
- GSC Cinemas in Mid Valley Megamall (KL), Queensbay Mall (Penang), Sunway Carnival (Prai), Dataran Pahlawan (Malacca), Alamanda (Putrajaya);

Released earlier this year in March, "Talentime" follows a group of students and teachers as they prepare for a talent contest in a school. Through the course of rehearsals and preparations, tragedy and emotions blend together and raise questions of faith, race, love and life.

Yay! Come and watch Talentime, the late Yasmin Ahmad’s recent movie which will be showing in a few cinemas for a limited time.
I watched this movie at a media event and it was an awesomely heartwarming movie. Paired with a really good soundtrack, this is one movie that is defiantly a keeper for your DVD collection.
Highly recommended!

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 9 (Bernama) — Avoiding masturbation and homosexual activities are among preventive measures one could take against Influenza A (H1N1), according to an eminent practitioner of complimentary therapy.
Dr. V. M. Palaniappan said that such activities caused the body to develop friction heat which in turn, produced acid and made the body hyperacidised.
"Thus, the body becomes an easy target for H1N1 infection," he told Bernama, emphasising however, that normal sexual union between members of the opposite sex was absolutely safe. The former associate professor of ecology at Universiti Malaya has authored several books on complementary therapy called, ‘Ecological Healing System’.
Dr Palaniappan said his 33 years of research had shown that high acidity in the body resulted in loss of immunity, thus making people more susceptible to viral diseases like Influenza A (H1N1).Hence, to prevent acidity, it was essential to consume alkaline food and drinks that could neutralise excess acid in the body.
Dr Palaniappan recommends coconut water, which is alkaline, and therefore could be used as a herbal medicine for the prevention of H1N1.
For example, he said, those who felt feverish and developed a burning sensation while attending to a call of nature because of extreme acidity, could neutralise it by drinking coconut water, twice a day, for three days.
He also recommended orange, lemon and pomelo which, despite containing citric acid, were very rich in potassium and therefore, would not disturb the body’s immunity.
According to Dr Palaniappan, excessive physical activity like running a marathon should be avoided as it produced acid due to excessive metabolic activity.
Similarly, he said, keeping late nights without adequate sleep and working without proper rest could also increase the body’s acidity which in turn, lowered immunity and made the body vulnerable to viral attacks.
Dr Palaniappan’s blog: http://ecohealingsystem.blogspot.com/ discusses the therapy in more detail.
