PC Fair - So not my thing

Thursday
Dec 6,2007

The Pikom PC fair (http://pikom.org.my) is back in town. That’s where all the newest and best deals on computer gadgets and peripherals are available. It starts tomorrow (7 Dec) and ends on Sunday (9th Dec) in the KL Convention Center. A few ppl were asking me if I was going.

Personally I don’t really like to go to crowded places, if I can help it. Then what about clubs? I hear you say. Well, I *chose* to go to clubs and if its too crowded I can step out of the club for a breather. But have you *been* to the PC Fair? You can hardly walk through the throngs of people. And with all the stall owners screaming their wares, its like walking through a mayhem of craziness. Then the traffic jam going to the heart of KL.

I’d rather just stay at home and scout for tech bargains online. I kinda need to go look for new hard disk drives. I currently have 160GB and its filling up fast, what with my crazy addiction TV Series and downloading with VPN. Hehe! And the best part is, I’m not only limited to just this weekend, but updated info on bargains and special deals 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. They also have coupons to help me save more. Nice!

No more pushing, shoving and squeezing through the crowd to get the best deals!

Testing in progress

As most of you know, I’m thinking of changing my blog template. Its a rather tedious process. First if of course finding the template that you like.

Then you have to edit it and in my case, I have to edit it to put in all the codes for my plugins and move stuff here and there (because I don’t like to use widgets). Then there’s the testing phase where after I did all the editing, I ask my loyal readers, you guys, if you like what you see :)

I found a template I like - Damai by Eches - which is fresh with colors like green and white. So please bear with me if the page loads slowly or you see weird, out of place things.

[Tech Tuesday] Vista Drive Icon

old hard drive icons

If you are using WinXP, opening My Computer gives you a view like the above. As you can see, I have 3 hard disks - 60GB partitioned into C & E drives and 80GB for D drive. I also have a floppy (does any one even use them these days?), DVD/CD-RW Drive, DVD-RW Drive, loads of Removable Disks (due to my card reader) and a virtual DVD Drive (L: ) for disc images.

Its a bit hard to see how much space you are using unless you select Details View. In Vista, the Icons view gives you a bar underneath to show how much space you’re using. For us folks who don’t use vista, there’s a program to do just that. After downloading (it just takes a minute) and installing, your My Computer will look like this

new hard drive icons

The Drive with the Windows Icon obviously shows which drive your OS is located. I need to burn out the stuff in my HDs soon lah. Too many on-going TV series

Cheap Hosting

I was reading a friend’s blog who was writing about a sudden increase of projects for website designers and freelancers. Suddenly everyone realizes the potential of having their corporate website. These types of websites can range from simple informational websites to online stores to complex portals.

For some, it might be confusing to think about domain names and cheap small business hosting. How to design their site, whats the best colours to use, the best layout and how to present the information in the best and effective way possible.

For some, it might be confusing to think about domain names and cheap small business hosting. How to design their site, whats the best colours to use, the best layout and how to present the information in the best and effective way possible. Then there’s the added headache about buying and selling products - whats the best method? Credit cards? Paypal?

Companies both big and small are looking for ecommerce hosting which is using linux hosting or cpanel hosting can get it from AQHost. AQHost provides clients with site design, shopping cards and SSL Certifications. They can also set up a Merchant account for companies who want to sell their products for processing Credit Cards.

And best of all, it cheap!

If you’re a student (like me) or unemployed and have no constant income, then its hard for you to apply for a credit card which usually requires all sorts of documents, bla bla bla. My solution is, just get a debit card.

Hafreze was asking me to share my experience of using this debit card so I decided to write the post. There are a few debit cards available in Malaysia, two that I know of is the Public Bank debit card and the Ambank NexG Prepaid MasterCard. After some deliberation, I chose the latter.

Read a complete guide after the jump. (more…)
