My thoughts : TV3 did a great job in utilizing social media in their site with facebook and twitter. They even set up a twitter wall showing all tweets hashtaged with #ask09. Not to mention a live feed on their microsite. Even tho I didn’t watch, but I thought the idea was awesome.

One question tho, why is the twitter hashtag #ask09 and not #as09? Is it because it sounds like ASS? Too controversial?

Movie Review : 2012 Exclusive Premiere (No spoilers)

Posted by on November 12, 2009  |  1 Comment

Centuries ago, the Mayans and other ancient civilizations predicts the year 2012 to be the destruction of the world.

Fast forward to current time: We see Jackson Curtis (John Cusack) struggling author, divorcee and part time limo-driver trying to spend time with his kids who mainly live with their mother and her plastic surgeon (focusing on boobs) boyfriend.

We also see a young Scientist Adrian Helmsley (Chiwetel Ejiofor) who, with his team has been predicting the destruction and trying to find a solution to work around it while preserving mankind.

That’s a quick summary I can make without giving too much spoilers.

My company had a corporate screening of the movie 2012 on Tuesday (10th Nov) – two days before the official premiere date on 12th November. We had an excess of tickets because some people didn’t turn up so I got to watch this movie in GSC Gold Class, albeit the first row.

Since the movie is coming out today in Malaysia, here’s my review:

2012

I must applaud the awesome effects. In this movie you will see explosions, lava, volcanos forming out of flat land masses, massive clouds of smoke in the air. The earth opened up, splitting in many pieces and buildings collapsing into this gaping hole.

This movie is rated PG13 if I’m not mistaken so there isnt too much gore but you will still feel sad when you see the lives that are lost, falling off buildings, crushed by concrete, etc.

2012

The storyline focuses on what man will do in times of desperation. Would you be selfish and think of yourself? Or would you be compassionate? Clearly it shows that in the face of destruction , prejudices like race, age, rank and finances are secondary.

The movie is a bit long, about two hours or so but in that span of time, i was entertained – laughing at the jokes "Pick up your big butt for me baby" and sad at the touching moments and feeling full of hope in humanity during one of the character’s speech.

The only thing I didnt like about this movie was how the hero , Jackson Curtis, was too good to be true – everything he did turned out exactly like expected. Also, being a doomsday movie, the ending was very predictable.

All in all, I’d give it a 6/7 over 10 Rating.

So what will you do if it was the end of days?

Yay! Come and watch Talentime, the late Yasmin Ahmad’s recent movie which will be showing in a few cinemas for a limited time.

I watched this movie at a media event and it was an awesomely heartwarming movie. Paired with a really good soundtrack, this is one movie that is defiantly a keeper for your DVD collection.

Yasmin Ahmad, acclaimed Malaysian director, passed away :(

Posted by on July 26, 2009  |  6 Comments

Yasmin Ahmad is the critically-acclaimed multi-award winning film director, writer and scriptwriter from Malaysia and is also the executive creative director at Leo Burnett Kuala Lumpur. Her television commercials and films are well-known in Malaysia for their humour, heart and love that crosses cross-cultural barriers, in particular her ads for Petronas, the national oil and gas company.

Her movies, Rabun, Sepet, Gubra, Mukhsin, Muallaf & Talentime have won multiple awards internationally. Unfortunately due to our censorship board, some of them are not aired here in Malaysia. Even if they are, they are heavily cut :/

She was admitted to Damansara Specialist Center on Thursday (23 July 2009) and was in a critical condition after surgery for a brain haemorrhage. And today (26 July) she passed away just a few hours ago.

I was following her blog at yasminthestoryteller.blogspot.com before she moved to a second blog here. Her movies are all entertaining, heartwarming and inspiring. The last time I saw Yasmin Ahmad was at an Event for Talentime. She looked so happy then.

Malaysia has lost one of its most creative and inspiring minds. Yasmin, may you rest in peace. :’(

[Movie Review] Watchmen

Posted by on March 10, 2009  |  11 Comments

I personally really like reading graphic novels. And the Hollywood trend now is to create movies based on graphic novels or games. Some have succeeded (like 300) but others have disappointed. Watchmen is based on a graphic novel by Alan Moore with the same title. It has 12 issues. I watched My friend brought me to watch this movie in GSC Midvalley last Sunday evening.

Watchmen is set at a time where masked superheroes were once revered and adored by the public. Newspaper articles, publicity and fame. Soon after, the people weren’t happy with the vigilantes, demanding that the police do their job. So most of the heroes retired and proceeded to live normal lives. However, when the Comedian is mysteriously murdered, the heroes are come out of hiding to find out what is threatening them.

The movie was captivating from the very start. The intro of the movie was shot like “still 3d images” where the people in the scene were “frozen”- I have no other way of explaining it, you have to watch it yourself. The intro really gives you a glimpse of the current setting – 1985s, where the US was threatened by the possibility of a nuclear attack from the Soviets, and superheroes hug up their masks. I like how they gave this background without any dialog or making the movie longer.

The story then continues with how the public was fascinated with the superheroes who remained in the public eye: Adrian Veidt – formerly the superhero Ozymandias, the smartest man on earth, turned businessman – and Dr Manhattan (formerly Dr John Osterman) who is blue and “can restructure subatomic particles at will, perceive happenings on the subatomic level, live forever, resize himself at will and teleport.”

Then one day, one of the heroes – the Comedian, a man who has strength and is good in combat – suddenly gets murdered. Rorschach – a masked vigilante who wears a sock with changing ink blots over his head – is determined to find out who was behind it. In the process, he also gets set up.

The thing I really liked about this movie was how they portrayed the watchmen as human. Not like some god-like being who are so different that us. They make mistakes, they cry and they feel remorse.

Anyway, I really don’t want to write anymore without giving away too much. Point is, I found this movie entertaining. If you are looking for an action packed flick filled with fighting scenes and not much dialog, this is not the movie for you. If you are looking for something that is deeper and interesting, do go watch it.

Movie Review : Bolt 3D

Posted by on December 7, 2008  |  3 Comments

I was at Pavillion last weekend just to jalan-jalan because I seldom go there and I wanted to catch a movie. So, I decided to go and watch Bolt 3D since the only time I’ve seen a 3D movie is in the IMAX teather.

Summary : For super-dog Bolt, every day is filled with adventure, danger and intrigue – at least until the cameras stop rolling. When the canine star of a hit TV show is accidentally shipped from his Hollywood soundstage to New York City, he begins his biggest adventure yet – a cross-country journey through the real world. Armed only with the delusions that all his amazing feats and powers are real, and with the help of two unlikely traveling companions – a jaded, abandoned housecat named Mittens and TV-obsessed hamster in a plastic ball named Rhino – Bolt discovers he doesn’t need superpowers to be a hero.

This is a nice movie to watch with the family tho. The hamster is sooo cute and funny. The dog, Bolt, is naive and innocent. And the cat, Mittens is street smart. Its a feel good movie where everything turns out right in the end.

Honestly, I thought this movie was just okay. Nothing spectacular to be shouting about. Not to say that it was lousy. It was good. Just not excellant. Walt Disney, what happened to your disney magic? Tsk

Oh yea, dont take the 3D one. Its only available in certain GSC and TGV cinemas. I didn’t think it was worth it since the “3D” effect was rather little. You can see the depth of field between the characters and the background but thats about it I think.

[Movie Review] Babylon A.D. (no spoilers)

Posted by on August 28, 2008  |  6 Comments

Short intro of the movie : Toorop (Vin Diesel) is a mercenary surviving in the very run down land of Russia. His appearance is of one that has seen many things in his life and killed many people, hardened with scars on his face. He is then assigned to deliver a girl from a convent in Khazakstan to New York. She looks innocent but something lurks between those glassy eyes. What is her secret? And who are these people that are after her?

Have you guys seen the trailer for this? Vin Diesel with his growly voice fighting, Michelle Yeoh with her flying kicks and that awesome awesome scene with where the missle exploded around the girl (Melanie Thierry) and the flames just swirled around her without hurting her.

Well, this is yet another case of trailer-is-better-than-the-movie. In the beginning the movie was exciting, with the fighting and the shooting but after that, it was all just boring. And the ending? This is the movie that will make you go “What? That’s it?!?!”

Interesting story but the ending was such a dissapointment. Even the director himself Mathieu Kassovitz isn’t happy with the movie. He said there were too many cuts. So much so that even Vin Diesel joked “”Am I even in the movie any more, or am I on the cutting room floor?” [Source] Its sad when even the director and actors themselves aren’t too pleased with the movie.

My rating : 1.5 of 5 stars :(

Much thanks to Miu [review] for getting tickets to the premiere :) and even getting one extra for me at the very last minute. Hurley [review] and UncleFrog [review] was there tho I didn’t see them (and uncle sombong dowan to tegur me :().

Oh yea, did u guys notice the RELA ppl patrolling the cinema? Hoping to catch some people recording I think. Pls, who would want to show a cam version of such a lousy show.

[Movie Review] Wall-E

Posted by on August 26, 2008  |  3 Comments

I don’t know what it took sooo long for me to write a review about this movie. Probably coz I got lazy. LOL!

Anyway, Wall-E is the story about a lonely robot left on earth to compress rubbish and nicely stack them up. His other robot pals have died (?) and his only companion is a little cockroach. One day, a new robot landed on earth on her quest to find something that will secure the future of the planet. She is then transported back to space and Wall-E chases after her.

The people at Pixar did it again! This movie is sooo adorable and touching and cute! Its amazing how such a deep felt movie can be made with a very minimal dialog. The animation is superb.

Basically this movie is so great that I actually watched it THREE times. Yes! Three times – twice in the cinema, no less. So yea, go watch it!
