Thomas Barnes and Kent Taylor are two Secret Service agents assigned to protect President Ashton at a landmark summit on the global war on terror. When President Ashton is shot moments after his arrival in Spain, chaos ensues and disparate lives collide in the hunt for the assassin. In the crowd is Howard Lewis, an American tourist who thinks he’s captured the shooter on his camcorder while videotaping the event for his kids back home. Also there is American TV news producer Rex Brooks, relaying the historic event to millions of TV viewers across the globe. Review : Charlie Wilson’s War

Wednesday
Mar 5,2008

Based on the true story of how Charlie Wilson, an alcoholic womanizer and Texas congressman, persuaded the CIA to train and arm resistance fighters in Afghanistan to fend off the Soviet Union. With the help of rogue CIA agent, Gust Avrakotos, the two men supplied money, training and a team of military experts that turned the ill-equipped Afghan freedom-fighters into a force that brought the Red Army to a stalemate and set the stage for conflicts in the Middle East that still rage to this day.

Review : The Warlords

Saturday
Dec 22,2007

I went to check out Sunway Pyramid yesterday. After the extensive renovations, it looks really nice. Except that they lost their Egyptian feel in the new wing. It feels so much like Midvalley, with round ends - like the North and South courts.

I watched this movie yesterday at TGV Sunway Pyramid. Actually wanted to watch Across the Universe with Zakri (a friend of mine who I haven’t met for some time) but it wasn’t showing any more :( or perhaps it wasn’t showing in TGV.

Well before i get on about the movie, i want to complain about the cinema. It was LOUSY! First of all the lady at the counter who sold me the tickets was so silly. I asked which side the screen was  buying the tickets. And she told me the direct opposite. I had lousy seats! Like 4-5 seats from the front. The whole cinema was lousy anyway. The incline of the floor was so steep that the headrest of your seat is at the knees of the person behind u. Sucks!

The Warlords is a 2007 Chinese / Hong Kong martial arts / drama film directed by Peter Chan and starring Andy Lau, Jet Li and Takeshi Kaneshiro. The film is set in the 1860s, during the Taiping Rebellion in the late Qing Dynasty in China. The story, based on an unresolved crime in 1870, tells of three sworn brothers (played by Andy Lau, Jet Li and Takeshi Kaneshiro) who turn against one another over a beautiful woman (Xu Jinglei).

Yea, I went to watch a Mandarin movie. Hehe! I saw the trailer for the movie some time ago and it looks interesting. Its a very interesting story of love, war, fighting, friendship and of course brotherhood. It’s a good mix of elements told in narration by the cute cute Takeshi Kaneshiro. Hehe!

[Review] I Am Legend

Saturday
Dec 15,2007

It is the Year 2012 and New York is deserted. Cars abandoned and the streets are overrun by weed and plants. Buildings are empty and run down. A man and his dog are the only living creatures that we can see. Then we see a pack? herd? of deer suddenly appearing on screen. The hunt is on. Man and dog chase after the deer (perhaps for food?) but were beaten to it by lions (btw, the lioness does the hunting while the lion stands by and watch - pemalas!).

I am Legend actually a title of a 1954 sci-fi novel by Richard Matheson about the last man alive on the planet Earth. The novel tells the story of the monotony and horror of the daily life of the protagonist, Robert Neville. Neville is apparently the only survivor of an apocalypse caused by a pandemic of bacteria, the symptoms of which are very similar to vampirism. [Wiki] The 2007 movie I am Legend is a film adaptation of the book. Not a 100% book-turned-movie but with a different ending.

I found this movie to be really interesting. It focused on how Neville learned to survive by himself in a deserted world and especially how he had to cope with his loneliness. In a series of flashbacks, we piece together the puzzle of his past - how the virus started, what was his role in it and what happened to his family. With only his dog as company, he has to adapt to being one person against the world.

Quite surprisingly, the combination of total silence in some parts of the movie and music in others (this is my multimedia student side talking) enhanced the scenes by forcing us to focus on the complexity of the situation. The effects of a deserted NYC was really fantastic and realistic.

If you’re looking for a movie that is Resident Evil-ish with blood, gore, shooting and slicing, you might be disappointed. There are numerous action scenes but this movie really focuses on the storyline. All in all, I think that it was a really good film adaptation of the book.
