Review : Surf’s Up

Tuesday
Jun 26,2007

Delinn dah mintak review so here goes…

A penguin movie instantly brings to mind Happy Feet, with its adorable Mumble and his dancing feet supported by wonderful singing. However this movie is totally different from Happy Feet, which is technically a musical.

Surf’s Up is a “documentary/reality show style” movie about Cody Maverick (Shia LeBeouf of Even Stevens & Transformers fame) journey from home to the Big Z Memorial Surf Off on Pen Gu Island, Hawaii. The characters in the movie are interviewed as the movie progresses.

“Old footage” from Cody’s childhood

The story starts off with Cody as a child in Shiverpool Antarctica who loves to surf, unlike his other penguin friends and family who are busy collecting fish, and hopes to be like Big Z, the best surfer in the world who died in a surfing accident. He then makes his way to Hawaii for the Big Z Memorial Surf off.

On the way, he makes friends with Chicken Joe (voiced by Jon Heder - Napolean Dynamite & Blades of Glory) who supports him all the way. After a bad accident a few days before the competition, the kind-hearted cute she-penguin Lani (voiced by Zooey Deschanel - Almost Famous) brings him to Geek (voiced by Jeff Bridges), a recluse who lives deep in the jungle away from everyone. They teach him that winning is not everything

I really liked the concept of this movie where you can get the commentary and get to know the movie from all the different viewpoints of the characters. Cody is a typical teenager, rebellious and always think he’s right. Chicken Joe is the comic relief in this movie, hilarious and looks like he’s high on weed or something. LOL! Lani is the “babe” and love interest of Cody (every movie is incomplete without one).

The movie is a feel-good movie - great for bringing the family. Its a typical cartoon movie with all the nilai-nilai moral, great animation and lovable characters. Especially all those baby penguins.

The OST is nice also, with songs like Incubus - Drive (”Whatever tomorrow brings I’ll be there, with open arms and open eyes”), SugarRay - Into Yesterday and The Romantics - What I like about You. Cant wait for this friday to share it with you on Download Friday.

[Review] Safari for Windows

Tuesday
Jun 12,2007

Apple released their Safari 3 Public Beta for Windows early this morning after the launching of Leopard - the new Mac OS. According to the website, Safari is “the fastest web browser on any platform, Safari loads pages up to 2 times faster than Internet Explorer 7 and up to 1.6 times faster than Firefox 2.”

Anyway, here’s my review about Safari after bringing it for a test run. My PC is running on Pentium 4 2.8gHz, 512MB ram, NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 440 with AGP8X and Windows XP Home Edition SP2. I currently use (mainly) Firefox 2.0.04 , Opera 9.02 and Internet Explorer 7.

I downloaded Safari from the Safari Download Site (without Quicktime) and it only takes a few minutes to download and install. The first thing that I liked about Safari was that from the moment i fired it up after installing (no need to restart) it automatically imported all my bookmarks from Internet Explorer (IE) and Firefox (FF). Not only that, it also imported all my history.

tn_safari.jpg

Interface Design
As you can see, it is similar to all the other Mac applications like iTunes - very sleek and minimalistic. It has the usual File | Edit | View | History | Bookmarks | Window | Help. The arrow buttons < > are of course “Back” and “Next”. The next button is the Reload or Cancel [X] buttons. After that is the “Report bug” button which looks like a bug (Duh!) then the address bar and search bar. In the next line is the bookmarks bar which will open the bookmarks organizer (the book button). There are no toolbars or status bars at the bottom of the browser - which gives a bigger viewing window.

safari6.jpg

Bookmarks
After clicking the book button, this window opens (same window). On the left is all the folders. The last two folders are Imported IE Favourites and Imported Firefox/Mozilla Favourites. Like I said earlier, this was automatically imported, eliminating the need for the user to make extra clicks.

Another feature in Safari is the inbuilt RSS Reader, you can add RSS Feeds as bookmarks and get updates without having to login to website such as Google Reader or Bloglines.

Merge Windows
One of my favourite feature in Safari is the ability to merge windows. Lets say you open a few windows with different sites and different tabs. For example like below…

tn_safari2.jpg

Then just click on WINDOW and click Merge All Windows like so…

tn_safari2b.jpg

Then you will see all your windows merged into one window with multiple tabs. Cool ain’t it?

Downloading

When you download something, it appears in a small pop up window which lists down all the downloads - similar to FF. IE opened individual pop up windows which can be messy. But I prefer Opera’s method which opened downloads in a tab.

tn_safari4.jpg

Since we’re on this window, I want to comment on Uploading stuff. As you can see from the picture, this is my friendster Upload Photos page. In other browsers, you will see a blank box then a [Browse] button to select the file which will then show the full address. I find that the Safari design is neater and looks nicer, plus it instantly shows the filename and type instead of something long like C:/Documents and Settings/My photos/Me/DSC00563.jpg

Surfing the web
I find that Safari does open websites faster than the other 3 browsers I’ve used. Not only that, there are hardly any differences in the designs of websites that we can sometimes find when opening websites in different browsers (such as FF vs IE).

Safari has various features like Password saving - similar to FF. It also has a form of security to ensure that you are at the correct site. Im not really sure what this is called but its something like certificate authentication (i think).

tn_safari3.jpg

One special feature of Safari is that you can set it to Private Browsing (under Edit). In this mode, webpages are not added to the history, items are automatically removed from the Downloads window, information isnt save for AutoFill (for names and passwords) and searches are not added to the pop-up menu in the Google search box. Great for browsing for porn when you’re sharing computers.

Cons

  • I dont like how you cant use the mouse middle button to click on a link to open it in a new tab. The shortcut in Safari is Ctrl+right click.
  • The security features i mentioned earlier is good, but i find it annoying that it doesnt even recognize www.google.com and I have to keep on clicking continue every time i click on a new Google related link (which includes Gmail and Blogger).
  • Another thing that bugs me is that in FF and IE, when you mouse over a link, it shows the URL to that link at the bottom of the browser so you know where it points to BEFORE clicking on it.
  • [Edited] It also uses up quite a lot of memory. Of course FF does that too, but at least you can tweak it.

Conclusion
Safari really does have lots of unique and useful features, and is a great way for web developers using Windows to check how their web-based applications and websites look in Macs.

However, but then again there are minor annoyances so I’ll still stick to my FF with its add-ons which caters to my every single whim. Hehe!

Friday Night

Went to lepak at a fren’s place in ampang with Ms Moesha. Was stuck in a bloody jam for almost an hour. Guess where the jam was? On the NKVE highway from Kota Damansara tol to Jalan Duta Tol which is just ONE toll away….and stuck for almost 1 hr padahal that is less than 10 mins usually. :-w

Went to pick up Ms Moesha at Sentul. We some how miscommunicated and she ended up waiting at a different place, lucky not that far away. Poor gal :P anyway we managed to find out way there. Lepak2 and played cards the whole night then at 7am ish went to send Ms Moesha to her frens place, and I went to another fren’s place to sleep. zzzz |-)

Sunday Night
I also went to watch Shrek 3 with Jai at Cineleisure. I was quite dissapointed that CinemaOnline.com gave it such a low review. They were kutuking the fact that the characters had the same kind of humour. Err…they’re the same characters…hello? But i agree that the role of Artie (Justin Timberlake) should have been deeper and given more screentime.

Anyway, I had lots of fun laughing during this movie - and I was probably the only one laughing at the ‘Hooters’ reference in the movie :)) The ending is of course rather predictable (as in most cartoon movies) - and I like how they intergrated other story book charaters like Merlin, Lancelot, Snow White, Cinderella, Rapunzel and Sleeping Beauty. All in all, this is a great movie to watch to make you feel good :D

Today (monday) I went to Bukit Bintang with Zakri to get a present for his gf…yea I had to go and follow him to help him choose what to buy. He shops like a girl! We went to so many shops to survey-survey things and compare prices. If me, I’ll just pick and go. But ituler…dah org tu sayang kat gf dier kan…so must get the best things.

First we went to parkson and bought a nice silver box. Then while walking, we saw Body Shop and noticed they had this huge sale, up to 50% off, so we popped in. And after smelling a hundred scents, he decided to buy the Rougeberry perfume for her. And I also TERbeli 2 bottles of shower gel which smelled heavenly and a small bottle of home fragrance oil which was CHEAP! Only RM37 in total.

Then finally we went to this shop to buy a very nice red and light red selendang for his girl and packed it nicely into the box. Oh yea, he also bought me one orange one because it was “the first time we met face-to-face (I got to know him last year through chatting) and that I helped him pick out the presents.” So sweet!

i finally went for my first live performance (which is not in a club) at Alexis Bistro, Ampang at Great Eastern Mall.

Me: im goin for my first live performance
(=FAF=): What live performance?
(=FAF=): Petaling Street Blog Convention Presentation on Social Re-engineering?
Me: http://alexis.com.my/html/content.php?id=33
(=FAF=): You sing?
Me: no~!
Me: thats someone else la
Me: bangang
(=FAF=): Hahaha
(=FAF=): But you said your “first live performance” so I thought….
(=FAF=): I thought you were performing
(=FAF=): Which surprised me immensely, to say the least
Me: ……

A invited Pam and I to Alexis, Ampang to listen to a live performance by Shayna Zaid. Who’s Shayna Zaid you ask? I quote from Alexis’ website :

New York based Malaysian, Shayna Zaid’s unique and mesmerizing vocal chords will captivate you. Her soulful voice is unmistakably powerful, yet tender, strong yet sweet, and mature beyond her years. Shayna’s genuine ability to draw you into her lyrical world will leave you grounded, uplifted and inspired. Her sound is commercially modern, yet authentic and timeless.

I was soooo hungry coz i woke up late and didnt hv lunch or dinner. A smsed us to make sure we would be at Alexis at 9.30pm and we were there on the dot (which is like seldom :P) and he was still on the way :-w

Oh well, we went in first and drooled over the menu (it was my first time there) but decided not to order until the A and his friends came. Just ordered iced chocolate and stilled water i.e. plain water. Finally they all came -1 couple, another girl and 3 guys - and we ordered our food. The band (2 guitarist & 1 drummer) did the opening act then Shayna sang a few songs.

How was the night?

I liked Alexis because of the ambiance, such a nice place to have a quiet romantic dinner (not on weekends tho because it’ll be packed). The food was okay. I had the spaghettini seafood packet which came wrapped up in a paper (like for ‘tapau’ing lol!) and pam had the Alexis platter - slices of french loaf, lebanese bread, popiah, meat patties, dried tomatoes and various sauce. My pasta was kinda biasa but had lots of prawns (not the freshest prawns I had), mussles and sotong calamari. The rest had some pasta and chicken pie ( the soup with the pastry thing like in Dome). Pam’s popiah was too salty. The wine we had was quite good. We had like 2 glasses of white wine.

Why no pics? Num 1, it was a bit dark in there. Secondly, and most importantly, we were with a bunch of anak orang kaya - anak² datuk, young ppl who stayed overseas (Melbourne), young ppl who smoked cigars - so kinda segan to be like all sakai and taking photos.

Shayna Zaid is a really good singer and has a fantastic voice. Very passionate on stage and hyper. She has a sweet image. Her lyrics seem to be very close to her heart - to the point that she was in tears during one song.

We bought her CD and she signed it. Been ages since i bought a CD. LOL!

shayna2.jpg
This pic is for you Al! :P I kno u think she’s hot
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
After that, A ajaked us to CynnaBar at Heritage Row so we went for a little while. Was kinda boring. Songs were not so good (plus it was house) and we didnt know anyone except A. Plus I got a bit offended by A’s remark. I said “Hey A, how many glasses hv u drank? See im finishing my first glass already.” and he said “Hold (control yourself) on the bottle, I bought it for someone else“. Well hello?!? You offered drinks for us in the first place. Cant you even make a more tactful remark? As if i’m going to finish it. I wasnt the only person drinking it okay! Damn rude for him to say that.
We went home soon after and stopped by Idaman to makan (earlier food wasn’t that filling). On the way back, Pam was camwhoring all the way, we even took pics when we stopped for a red light. LOL!
That wraps up my weekend. How was yours? :)
At World’s End : A Review
Pirates of the Caribbean : At World’s End is the 3rd movie after the original Pirates of the Caribbean Movie. It is scheduled to come out tomorrow. A few companies organized gifts and competitions for this movie but I didnt participate in any.However, I knew cineleisure has shows from 9pm onwards. I dropped by cineleisure after lunch and bullied forced belanjad invited Afdzal to go watch this movie with me - and also go buy the tickets earlier - hopefully around 9.30pm. It was around 4pm and all the tickets were sold out (minus the front seats but of course who wants to sit there) except for the 12.30am show.
cineleisure1.jpg
After some debating, we decided, oklah we go see the 12.30am show and took the couples seat coz its at the back and has more space (and is the same price anyway). I was a bit surprised at the price tho, RM12. Thats pretty steep for Wednesdays but then again it was the opening day or premiere of a new movie. So he picked me around midnight and we went down to cineleisure, got a popcorn and we went to watch the movie.I was so smgt to sms Evie to ask if the movie was good, coz i tot she was going to watch the night show today. But apparently she was only goin to watch tommorrow and was about to sleep and hv sex (her words not mine). Hehe! I threatened to sms her every 5 mins tomorrow to tell the story.
cineleisure2.jpg
It was the first time I watched a midnight movie here and I was quite dissapointed by the service. Coz firstly, when they started projecting, the film was blur (but only the intros like the THX and Dolby Digital adverts), lucky it was all right when the movie actually started. Then secondly, the movie suddenly stopped in the middle with a blank screen and all the lights came on and those hotel-lounge-intrumental-music came on which was really potong stim i tell you! Summore it was at an interesting part. Demmit!
So yea, the following is my review and might hv some spoilers (ok in some cases, i kinda forgot names so just describe them)…click SHOW
Click here to show spoiler
So how did Jack get rescued and what did the pirates do to face up to the British? I guess that’s up to you to go and watch the movie to find out!
Review : Jangan Pandang Belakang
Tuesday
Apr 24,2007
** yea yea, I watched a Malay movie, dont faint. LOL!** tag]
jgn pandang blakang [Picture cilok-ed from CinemaOnline]
I saw Alangz promoting the movie on his status on Yahoo Messenger. So i pon tanya la siapa2 pegi:
alangz: coppp.. most of my friends bukan bloggers tau..
alangz: serindit, cekedess…
me: ada laki lain yg cute2 tak
alangz: delinn blom confirm..
alangz: adaaaaaaaa…….
alangz: hahahhaaa… solo lagi…
alangz: plus me
me::))
alangz: hahahaha
me: u manade solo dah :P
me: hsemate u dtg?
alangz: datang
alangz: and my friends.. 4 org yang solo
me: cute tak?
me: tak cute tamo pegi
alangz: cute…
alangz: hehee… well.. ada 6 org solo.. leh pilihhhh
So with that i decided to pegi tgk that movie :P anyway dah lama tak jumpa serindit ngan cekedess alangz tu dah byk sgt kali jumpa..bosan dah. So i drove down to Mines, got lost a bit reaching that area (its the first time I’ve been to Mines) met up with didit, alangz and his friends. After the movie we went to lepak at a nearby shop, eating and chit chatting.
muvee.jpg
From top left (clockwise) : Bontot2, group pic, pinggan alangz yg dijilat bersih, Alangz & Coco (jgn jeles ek zure) :P
How was the movie? Honestly, i almost never watch Malay movies in the cinema (I guess this is the third after Baik Punya Cilok and Cicakman) because they suck tend to have many things lacking.
JPB actually has a good and interesting storyline but for some reason, the ‘ghost’ looked more hilarious than scary. Of course there was a lot of use of scary music and haunting scream sound effects.
However thecinematography (cewah i sound like a filming expert) was pretty expected - showing a doorway in the background where something suddenly passes by, the presence of a long-haired thing in the elevator and the over-the-shoulder shot showing a ]ghost crawling on the ground.
Oh and certain scenes of the ghost floating, u can actually see a string :P lol!
