Even if you are not familiar with them, you would have definitely heard of the animated films titled ‘Howls Moving Castle’, ‘My Neighbour Totoro’ and ‘Spirited Away’ the later which is one of the first non-English language films to win an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.

Main Poster - The Wind Rises

Anyway, as Miyazaki is retiring, his last movie will be ‘The Wind Rises’, featuring the story of Jiro Horikoshi, a simple Japanese aircraft engineer, whose dream is to build beautiful aircrafts but eventually he gets caught in the struggles of heartbreak and war.

It has already been nominated for an Oscar and has reaped over RM357 mil since its debut in international theatres. But, its not shown in cinemas here (yet).

However, you can purchase a copy of this film in DVD during its nationwide release at AniManGaki 2014 at Sunway Pyramid from 10 am – 6pm on 9 – 10 Aug where Nozomi, the exclusive distributor for Studio Ghibli in Malaysia, will be commemorating the last 29 years of the studio’s success. Re-watch all the old classics from your favourite author and director Miyazaki and get the latest merchandising for your collection.

Yes! That’s this weekend. So go go go!

Full press release HERE (including a long synopsis of the movie and information about Hayao Miyazaki). More details on AniManGaki HERE and Facebook event page HERE.

#footnote : I’m going to Japan in Sept and hopefully my friend in Tokyo would be able to get us tickets to the Ghibli Museum which is notoriously hard to get so wish me (us) luck! Otherwise, I guess I’d have to settle for the Ghibli 3-D Building Exhibition at the Tokyo Museum showcasing the architecture  in the Ghibli movies.

Is “The Wind Rises” DVD released by Nozomi Group in Malaysia a real original DVD which got the distributing license from Studio Ghibli or is it just another bootleg DVD that got the original sticker from Malaysian Government? Sorry to ask this question but you know our anime DVD market is full of bootleg right. It’s hard to differentiate between an original DVD with proper license and a bootleg DVD.
