Review : Charlie Wilson’s War
Based on the true story of how Charlie Wilson, an alcoholic womanizer and Texas congressman, persuaded the CIA to train and arm resistance fighters in Afghanistan to fend off the Soviet Union. With the help of rogue CIA agent, Gust Avrakotos, the two men supplied money, training and a team of military experts that turned the ill-equipped Afghan freedom-fighters into a force that brought the Red Army to a stalemate and set the stage for conflicts in the Middle East that still rage to this day.

I watched this movie in Cineleisure a few days ago (which day was it dear?). Its a politically charged movie – much like Lions for Lambs. But is more light-hearted. About Charlie Wilson playing a key role in helping Afghanistan beat the Soviet Union. The socialite, Joanne Herring (played by Julia Roberts), helped a lot by using her impressive international contacts. You can see how much older Julia Roberts looks in this movie.
Honestly, I didn’t like the movie. It didn’t really explain how a simple congressman could suddenly make huge decisions for the country. I was lost most of the time. Being a hollywood movie, you can never be too sure how much is fiction and how much is fact.
In this movie it shows that its not what you know that counts, but who you know. Sounds a lot like our own gomen eh? Anyway, I never really liked political and war movies so if you’re like me, feel free to give this movie a miss.
p/s: Cineleisure couples seat is a really nice place to take a nap.
