[Movie Review] The X-Files: I Want to Believe

Posted by on July 25, 2008  |  4 Comments

OKay, this is going to be short and sweet coz I went out drinking after the movie and only came back around 2-3am then for no apparent reason woke up at 7am this morning. Tired and a bit hungover.

David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson

The story is set in a time where both Scully and Mulder have moved on from their lives in the FBI. Scully is a doctor and Mulder is, well, he’s still searching for the truth out there. Then, the FBI comes out of no where and asks for their help because a case they are currently solving involves some out-of-this-world elements. This forces both Scully and Mulder to be involved hand-in-hand with the FBI to solve the case.

Well, X Files fans, don’t expect to see your usual X-Files type of movie. This is a standalone movie which is nothing like the series. So you might be dissapointed. I felt like this movie lack so many elements. The plot is not really thought out well because it felt slow and draggy. Characters were kind of just there for the sake of being there.

It could have been a really good thriller movie with lots of suspense and sudden movements. Or it could hv been a good slasher movie with lots of blood and gore. But it was just somewhere in between, lacking that ‘omph’ factor. All in all, give this a miss. I wouldn’t even download/buy a pirated copy. its *that* boring.

I didn’t know any of them – tho I did know Joyce coz I sometimes comment on his blog – but it was fun meeting new ppl. We should hang out one day :D

Um..this post isn’t as short as I tot it would be. LOL!

Edit : Changed the links to show the reviews from the other bloggers :)

Review : Prince Caspian

Posted by on May 17, 2008  |  4 Comments

The Chronicles of Narnia : Prince Caspian starts of some 1300 years after the Golden Age of Narnia where the Narnians were prosperous. Telmarines invaded Narnia and is now controlled by the evil King Miraz, who took the throne from the rightful owner Prince Caspian.

This movie – adapted from the 2nd book ‘The Chronicles of Narnia’ written by C.S. Lewis – was more entertaining then the first. I thought the first was kinda draggy but this second movie was a good blend of good storytelling, action filled sword fighting and heartwarming scenes. I won’t say that its the best movie I watched, but its not bad :)

Bring the family, but make sure your stupid kid doesn’t kick the back of the chair in front. We were sitting in cineleisure’s couple seat when this couple sat behind us with a small kid who was noisy and kept kicking both of our chairs. The noise I understand, but the kicking? WTF! I even asked you to please stop but soon after that she started kicking again.

Review : Iron Man

Posted by on May 1, 2008  |  5 Comments

I watched Iron Man this afternoon at Cineleisure. Not many people in the cinema, in fact we had the whole row B to ourselves. The synopsis from Yahoo!Movies : “Tony Stark is a billionaire industrialist and genius inventor who is kidnapped and forced to build a devastating weapon. Instead, using his intelligence and ingenuity, Tony builds a high-tech suit of armor and escapes captivity. When he uncovers a nefarious plot with global implications, he dons his powerful armor and vows to protect the world as Iron Man.”

Usually with comic-turn-big-screen movies, there is some element of disappointment because its lacking certain elements but this movie has been touted as one of the best comic turned movie. Its set in sometime in the future where our technology is more advanced such as smart homes, hologram type of screens, model rendering which takes 2 seconds (as compared to the current 12 hours). It helps that Robert Downey Jr was good in his lead role of Tony Stark/Iron Man.

I enjoyed this movie because it wasn’t too out of this world with totally unrealistic CGI and weird plots. Good movie! So don’t forget to catch it in cinemas

[Review] Cloverfield

Synopsis : Five young New Yorkers throw their friend a going-away party the night that a monster the size of a skyscraper descends upon the city. Told from the point of view of their video camera, the film is a document of their attempt to survive the most surreal, horrifying event of their lives.

There was a lot of hype about this movie before it came out. Loads of teaser trailers, little snippets of information about the monster who attacked NYC. I went to watch this movie two days ago at Cineleisure (where else) and – like many other movies with loads of hype (i.e: The Golden Compass) it was kind of a dissapointment.

The movie was shot freestyle ala-Blair Witch Project. I think its actually harder to shoot a movie like that rather than the traditional cameras on the set style. The good part about it is that it really makes you feel like you are in the movie itself. The bad part is the shaky camera, unclear sounds and generally messy atmosphere. As a result, its like you miss little parts of the movie.

The story line was actually very slow in the beginning. A bit too much emphasis on the party they planned for Rob and introducing the characters so it was rather boring. I thought the interesting part only started somewhr in the middle of the movie where the attacks started (and when the statue of liberty lost her head – literally).

The reason what I said it was a dissapointment was because the ending sucked. After the movie, the whole cinema was speechless. Not out of awe, but like “huh? that’s it?”. There was no proper explanation about the monster, what happened next and all that.

Tech Tuesday : NexG – Cathay Cineplexes Debit Card

Posted by on October 23, 2007  |  3 Comments

If you’re a student (like me) or unemployed and have no constant income, then its hard for you to apply for a credit card which usually requires all sorts of documents, bla bla bla. My solution is, just get a debit card.

Hafreze was asking me to share my experience of using this debit card so I decided to write the post. There are a few debit cards available in Malaysia, two that I know of is the Public Bank debit card and the Ambank NexG Prepaid MasterCard. After some deliberation, I chose the latter.

Read a complete guide after the jump.

Review : Whisper

All Max Truemont (Josh Holloway) wants is a chance to make a fresh start with his fiancee Roxanne (Sarah Wayne Callies) … but a bank loan is not easy to get when you’re a felon who’s previously been convicted of manslaughter. Max’s last resort – and only remaining choice – is to team up with two shady associates hired by an absent mastermind to kidnap the son of one of the richest women in the state. As they await ransom instructions, the group begins to turn on each other as past suspicions, betrayals and secrets inexplicability come into play. When the escalating events take a horrific turn, it soon becomes apparent to Max that the child may not be the innocent he first appeared to be.

I watched Whisper at Cineleisure after buka puasa the other day. It stars Josh Holloway – who acted as Sawyer in Lost – and Sarah Wayne Callies who acted as Dr Sara Tancredi in Prison Break. This movie is a thriller which didnt quite make the cut. Yes there was some suspense and shocking parts where I did jump in my seat, but it lacked the climaxing not *that* kinda of climax moment.

Josh Holloway seriously needs to work on his emotions face. Come on! Expressionless ok! Like a poker face. His lines all lack meaning and feeling. Sarah Callies always seems to have that deer-caught-in-headlights look. Why lahhh whyy?? I cant help thinking about her role as Sara Tincredi (and also the very yummy Wentworth Miller) – same damsel-in-distress-omg-i-need-help kind of character. But Blake Woodruf as David (the kid who got kidnapped) was superb with his haunting eyes and sharp stare.

The basic plot of the movie could be improved to be better. There should more background information about the characters and how they got to that point. And Roxanne’s role should be expanded more – she is basically just there for show in the movie, to fill in the vacancy for a female character. I guess, the only interesting twist in the storyline was the secret Rox has which is only revealed at the end of the movie.

At World’s End : A Review

Pirates of the Caribbean : At World’s End is the 3rd movie after the original Pirates of the Caribbean Movie. It is scheduled to come out tomorrow. A few companies organized gifts and competitions for this movie but I didnt participate in any. However, I knew cineleisure has shows from 9pm onwards. I dropped by cineleisure after lunch and bullied forced belanjad invited Afdzal to go watch this movie with me – and also go buy the tickets earlier – hopefully around 9.30pm. It was around 4pm and all the tickets were sold out (minus the front seats but of course who wants to sit there) except for the 12.30am show.

cineleisure1.jpg

After some debating, we decided, oklah we go see the 12.30am show and took the couples seat coz its at the back and has more space (and is the same price anyway). I was a bit surprised at the price tho, RM12. Thats pretty steep for Wednesdays but then again it was the opening day or premiere of a new movie. So he picked me around midnight and we went down to cineleisure, got a popcorn and we went to watch the movie.I was so smgt to sms Evie to ask if the movie was good, coz i tot she was going to watch the night show today. But apparently she was only goin to watch tommorrow and was about to sleep and hv sex (her words not mine). Hehe! I threatened to sms her every 5 mins tomorrow to tell the story.

cineleisure2.jpg

It was the first time I watched a midnight movie here and I was quite dissapointed by the service. Coz firstly, when they started projecting, the film was blur (but only the intros like the THX and Dolby Digital adverts), lucky it was all right when the movie actually started. Then secondly, the movie suddenly stopped in the middle with a blank screen and all the lights came on and those hotel-lounge-intrumental-music came on which was really potong stim i tell you! Summore it was at an interesting part. Demmit!

So yea, the following is my review and might hv some spoilers (ok in some cases, i kinda forgot names so just describe them)…click SHOW

So how did Jack get rescued and what did the pirates do to face up to the British? I guess that’s up to you to go and watch the movie to find out!
