Posted by on August 12, 2009  |  3 Comments

11 Aug – Primeworks Studios and a group of cinema operators are coming together to honour the memory of the late film director Yasmin Ahmad by organising a re-screening of her latest movie "Talentime" on 13 August 2009 onwards, for a limited time only. The screening will be held across various cinemas nationwide and the organisers have pledged to donate RM1 to an undisclosed charity organisation for every movie ticket sold.

"Yasmin Ahmad was an icon of our film industry who will be sorely missed, and this is our way of honouring her memory and allowing viewers to enjoy her work on the big screen once again," said Dato’ Sri Farid Ridzuan, Media Prima Berhad’s Group CEO Television Networks. "Those who missed it will now have a chance to catch it, while those who have watched it before are welcome to come along again to join us in remembering her while contributing to charity."

    "Talentime" will screen at:
  •  GSC Cinemas in Mid Valley Megamall (KL), Queensbay Mall (Penang), Sunway Carnival (Prai), Dataran Pahlawan (Malacca), Alamanda (Putrajaya);
  • TGV Cinemas in KLCC (KL), Cheras Selatan (KL), 1 Utama (PJ), Bukit Tinggi (Klang), Bukit Raja (Klang), Tebrau City (Johor);
  • MBO Cinemas in Ampang (Selangor), Batu Pahat Mall (Johor), MBO Kluang (Johor), MBO Skudai (Johor);
  • Big Cinemas Lotus Five Star in Taiping (Perak), Teruntum (Kuantan), Riverside (Kuching), Alor Setar (Kedah);
  • Independent Cinemas in Growball (Kota Kinabalu) and The Mall (Brunei).

Released earlier this year in March, "Talentime" follows a group of students and teachers as they prepare for a talent contest in a school. Through the course of rehearsals and preparations, tragedy and emotions blend together and raise questions of faith, race, love and life.

[Movie Review] Watchmen

Posted by on March 10, 2009  |  11 Comments

I personally really like reading graphic novels. And the Hollywood trend now is to create movies based on graphic novels or games. Some have succeeded (like 300) but others have disappointed. Watchmen is based on a graphic novel by Alan Moore with the same title. It has 12 issues. I watched My friend brought me to watch this movie in GSC Midvalley last Sunday evening.

Watchmen is set at a time where masked superheroes were once revered and adored by the public. Newspaper articles, publicity and fame. Soon after, the people weren’t happy with the vigilantes, demanding that the police do their job. So most of the heroes retired and proceeded to live normal lives. However, when the Comedian is mysteriously murdered, the heroes are come out of hiding to find out what is threatening them.

The movie was captivating from the very start. The intro of the movie was shot like “still 3d images” where the people in the scene were “frozen”- I have no other way of explaining it, you have to watch it yourself. The intro really gives you a glimpse of the current setting – 1985s, where the US was threatened by the possibility of a nuclear attack from the Soviets, and superheroes hug up their masks. I like how they gave this background without any dialog or making the movie longer.

The story then continues with how the public was fascinated with the superheroes who remained in the public eye: Adrian Veidt – formerly the superhero Ozymandias, the smartest man on earth, turned businessman – and Dr Manhattan (formerly Dr John Osterman) who is blue and “can restructure subatomic particles at will, perceive happenings on the subatomic level, live forever, resize himself at will and teleport.”

Then one day, one of the heroes – the Comedian, a man who has strength and is good in combat – suddenly gets murdered. Rorschach – a masked vigilante who wears a sock with changing ink blots over his head – is determined to find out who was behind it. In the process, he also gets set up.

The thing I really liked about this movie was how they portrayed the watchmen as human. Not like some god-like being who are so different that us. They make mistakes, they cry and they feel remorse.

Anyway, I really don’t want to write anymore without giving away too much. Point is, I found this movie entertaining. If you are looking for an action packed flick filled with fighting scenes and not much dialog, this is not the movie for you. If you are looking for something that is deeper and interesting, do go watch it.

Movie Review : Bolt 3D

Posted by on December 7, 2008  |  3 Comments

I was at Pavillion last weekend just to jalan-jalan because I seldom go there and I wanted to catch a movie. So, I decided to go and watch Bolt 3D since the only time I’ve seen a 3D movie is in the IMAX teather.

Summary : For super-dog Bolt, every day is filled with adventure, danger and intrigue – at least until the cameras stop rolling. When the canine star of a hit TV show is accidentally shipped from his Hollywood soundstage to New York City, he begins his biggest adventure yet – a cross-country journey through the real world. Armed only with the delusions that all his amazing feats and powers are real, and with the help of two unlikely traveling companions – a jaded, abandoned housecat named Mittens and TV-obsessed hamster in a plastic ball named Rhino – Bolt discovers he doesn’t need superpowers to be a hero.

This is a nice movie to watch with the family tho. The hamster is sooo cute and funny. The dog, Bolt, is naive and innocent. And the cat, Mittens is street smart. Its a feel good movie where everything turns out right in the end.

Honestly, I thought this movie was just okay. Nothing spectacular to be shouting about. Not to say that it was lousy. It was good. Just not excellant. Walt Disney, what happened to your disney magic? Tsk

Oh yea, dont take the 3D one. Its only available in certain GSC and TGV cinemas. I didn’t think it was worth it since the “3D” effect was rather little. You can see the depth of field between the characters and the background but thats about it I think.

Review : Speed Racer (no spoilers)

speedracer_tracks

Thanks to Fly FM’s Night Flight, I won four free tickets to watch Speed Racer at GSC, One Utama just now. So I brought along Aree, Pam and Jazzy (but Jazzy couldn’t make it and the bf is sick). The movie started at 9pm but we went in a bit late coz we had dinner at Zuup first (their New England Clam Chowder is to die for).

Synopsis from Yahoo! Movies : To Speed Racer, nothing says “family values” like barreling down a racetrack at face-flattening speeds. So when mega-mogul Royalton offers the young driver a corporate sponsorship, Speed turns him down. An enraged Royalton tells Speed he’ll never win a race again, and he’ll send ninjas after Speed to insure it. It’s up to Speed, his best girl Trixie in her pink helicopter, and the enigmatic and brilliant Racer X to ensure Speed’s victory in “The Crucible”: the same perilous cross-country free-for-all that killed his brother. Will Speed follow in his big bro’s tire tracks?

At first, I didn’t really have high expectations for this movie because I read a review somewhere that it wasn’t so good and I never did like racing cars stories. Plus, comic/cartoon series based movies sometimes are a flop.

However, Speed Racer blew me away. Directed by Larry Wachowski and Andy Wachowski, the same people who brought The Matrix, it was a fast paced flashy movie combining well known and loved characters with a good story and fantastic effects. Not to mention a good lineup of actors and actresses namely, Emile Hirsch, Susan Sarandon, John Goodman, Christina Ricci, Matthew Fox, Kick Gurry.

Edit : Oh yea, i forgot to mention that it’s Rain’s Hollywood debut as well. Rain (whose real name is Jung Ji Hoon) is a South Korean singer/actor. Rain’s role is a Japanese driver who teamed up with Speed Racer and Racer X to race in the Crucible – like an underground race thats very dangerous and full of cheating contestants. KInda weird how they never mentioned him in the synopsis tho.

I loved how they combined comic book/cartoon style drawings with real life. Its really like reading a comic book with the characters having flashbacks and when the hero looks at the heroin, the background becomes blurry with colourful hearts. LOL! The CGI of the racetracks and scenes were also fantastic. Not too outrageous that it looks so fake (like most Malaysian movies attempts at CGI) but very creative.

All in all, great movie, good storyline and plot (I think aree felt like crying at some point) and superb cast – like the very yummylicious Matthew Fox and cute, adorable rain. :X

p/s: Jules of FlyFm asked if it was the movie with the talking dog. Well there isn’t any talking dog but there is a cute monkey.

[Review]RE:Extinction & Brave One

Synopsis : Alice, now in hiding in the Nevada desert, once again joins forces with Carlos Olivera and L.J., along with new survivors Claire (Ali Larter), K-Mart and Nurse Betty (Ashanti) to try to eliminate the deadly virus that threatens to make every human being undead and to seek justice. Since being captured by the Umbrella Corporation, Alice has been subjected to biogenic experimentation and becomes genetically altered, with super-human strengths, senses and dexterity.

I watched this with the gang the other day when it came out in the cinemas. This is the continuation of the previous Resident Evil movies. The zombie infection has spread to almost the whole human population, and the earth is a barren desert with a few human survivors travelling around learning to survive and escape from the zombies.

Fans of the previous movies will like this sequel. Personally i think that this tops all the previous movies. You really get the feel of the video game with its usual suspense and zombies (including ferocious dog zombies) popping out all over the place. This is a movie full of action, of blood, flames and slicing and shooting. Bring your boyfriend to watch it, he’ll love it.

Synopsis : New York radio host Erica Bain has a life that she loves and a fiancé she adores. All of it is taken from her when a brutal attack leaves Erica badly wounded and her fiancé dead. Unable to move past the tragedy, Erica begins prowling the city streets at night to track down the men she holds responsible. Her dark pursuit of justice catches the public’s attention, and the city is riveted by her anonymous exploits. But with the NYPD desperate to find the culprit and a dogged police detective hot on her trail, she must decide whether her quest for revenge is truly the right path, or if she is becoming the very thing she is trying to stop.

I watched this movie with a guy friend of mine. Its my first time seeing Jodie Foster playing a kind of character that was strong and determined like this one. She looked a lot older (with more fine lines) than when I last saw her. I think she captured the essence of her character very well.

Watching this movie felt like you were there with her, feeling her emotions and turmoil as she struggles with the death of her beloved fiance and the trauma from a brutal attack. You can almost feel the relief that she feels when she buys herself a gun to make her feel safe.

Its a tale of all the evil that can happen out there and our non-chalant attitude which thinks that ‘oh, that’ll never affect me’ until one fateful day. That one fateful day when evil arrives on your doorstep, when you least expect it, when you least want it.

My only dislike about this movie was that it was too damn slow. Argh…so many minutes were wasted on basically nothing. Great movie, fantastic actors/actresses, but oh so lousy timing.

Rating : (*)(*)(*) and half of 5 stars. It would hv gotten a 4 if it wasnt too draggy.

Review : The Seeker

Posted by on October 7, 2007  |  1 Comment

the seeker When Ariff said we were watching the seekers movie I was like “huh? seekers? that malay series looking for ghosts?” Apparently its this new movie called The Seeker : The Dark is Rising. According to the sypnosis, it “is the first film adaptation of the Susan Cooper’s acclaimed novel “The Dark Is Rising”. The film tells the story of Will Stanton, a young man who learns he is the last of a group of warriors who have dedicated their lives to fighting the forces of the Dark. Travelling back and forth through time, Will discovers a series of clues which lead him into a showdown with forces of unimaginable power. With the Dark once again rising, the future of the world rests in Will’s hands.”

Basically this movie is about the forces of good and evil fighting and their hero is a young boy who is suddenly given a huge role in which he knows nothing about. I love the setting of the movie, its like in a small village in england with huge manors, little cottages and snow. But i hated the angles, some of it was messy to the point that one or two shots were terbalik. The storyline was also too simple and predictable – light vs dark, time travelling, boy meets girl and falls in love with her, two funny twins in the family (for comic relief), guardian/mentor who doubts that the hero is the right person but is eventually supportive.

Rating : (*)(*) – I wouldn’t recommend watching this movie in the cinema, go grab a dvd or something
