[Review ] P1 W1Max Wiggy USB Modem

Posted by on April 10, 2009  |  6 Comments

Recap: I was invited to the Wiggy Preview for bloggers 2 days ago. I wrote about it and had a few pics here. However the modem was not working so I had to go back and replace it.

So, I went to P1 yesterday to replace my modem from Janice (because Naomi was at the media launch). It was encased in a black tin box which is styled in a similar way to the modem itself. I like the box. More photos at the bottom of this post.

I brought my laptop to P1 to test the modem as well because I don’t want to go all the way through the Federal jam if it was not working again. Upon plugging in the modem, it should prompt to ask if you want to install the drivers (or go to My Computer and find the P1 drive).

How to connect : Open up the dialer (it should be a black box with the word P1 in it on your desktop. The dialer its the purple box on the bottom right in the Speedtest screenshot below. It should start detecting the modem. Wait if it doesn’t. Try re-plugging in the modem.

Connecting : I notice that it usually takes a while for it to detect the modem and get connected as well. Even in P1 office I had to wait a bit. In some cases, I only got connected after exiting the dialer then taking out the modem then re-plugging it back in.

Above is the screenshot of my speedtest. This was in Bangsar Utama. The bottom right purple box is the dialer. Download – 0.99 Mb/s, Upload – 0.01 Mb/s, Ping – 153. I also ping’d google and got a few time outs but mostly it was okay.

Speeds : Surfing speeds were quite good. Youtube was not bad as well. One thing that I found was a bit weird is the downloading. I was trying to download something from rapidshare using IDM and I get fluctuating speeds. Something from 3kbs to 180Kbs. Its hard to say what’s the average download speed.

Conclusion : Based on my initial usage (so far) I’m quite satisfied with the speeds. Are you wiggy? ;)

P1 W1max ‘Wiggy’ USB Modem Preview

Posted by on April 8, 2009  |  22 Comments

P1 has been the forefront of providing wireless internet access in Malaysia. They first came out with a wireless modem for the desktop – a (roughly) 5x5x2 inch black modem.

Noami from P1 (packet One) kindly invited a few bloggers for a preview of the new ‘Wiggy’ USB Modem – two days ahead of the official (invite only) media launch tomorrow (Thursday, 9 Apr) at Upstairs, The Loft.

It started around 8.10pm with firstly a short speech by the CEO of P1 W1Max, Mr Michael Lai, who said “if you have problems, don’t hesitate to whack us”. LOL! Then by the tech guy – sorry I forgot your name – who explained briefly about how they started and what they finally came up with.

So they showed us their USB Modem. Its a small (roughly) 2 inches by 4 inches modem with a “flip” USB that you can plug straight into your laptop. What I really like is no wires and the fact that the USB part is adjustable/moveable.

Photos & specs after the jump.

That rainy day..

Posted by on March 19, 2008  |  No Comments

Remember how heavy the rain was last Tuesday (yesterday)?

Well I didn’t go to class on Tuesday (4-8pm) because I was sick – sneezing non stop since Tuesday morning due to a bad cold. Then it started raining heavily in the afternoon. I mean like really heavily, cats and dogs. Even my mom asked me not to go to class beause the rain was too heavy to drive long distance. Very loud thunder and lighting thrown in.

At one point there was this really bright flash of light and loud thunder and there was a trip. Luckily my laptop wasn’t plugged in at this time. Had to flick the switch on the power box – whatever it’s called. Then everything went back to normal. Or was it? First thing I noticed was that the internet was down. Went back out of my room to check the modem/router and found out that the modem had no lights. Electrocuted.

Oh, then my mom got a call from my youngest sis. She (my sis) tumpang-ed her tuition teacher to Centerpoint and as she was exiting the car, the opened the door and a car langgar-ed the door. Yep, pure carelessness. She didn’t even look out for a car before opening the door. Typical of her. My parents were pissed! My dad was like “all of you is like that, always accident. Feli (my sis) doesn’t even drive also can have this kind of accident.”

Mom had to drive to go pick her up while G and I were bored at home. No internet maa. So we wanted to go down to watch TV. Went downstairs and tried to on the TV. To no avail, electrocuted also. *sigh* Which added to my mom’s pissiness (is there such a word?) when she came back. Because the TV is her only source of entertainment at home.

Well, we managed to get a new modem & fix up the Internet that night. So yey for that! If not, I’d have to resort to watching all my DVDs which i downloaded and never watched. LOL!
