Review : Iron Man

Posted by on May 1, 2008  |  5 Comments

I watched Iron Man this afternoon at Cineleisure. Not many people in the cinema, in fact we had the whole row B to ourselves. The synopsis from Yahoo!Movies : “Tony Stark is a billionaire industrialist and genius inventor who is kidnapped and forced to build a devastating weapon. Instead, using his intelligence and ingenuity, Tony builds a high-tech suit of armor and escapes captivity. When he uncovers a nefarious plot with global implications, he dons his powerful armor and vows to protect the world as Iron Man.”

Usually with comic-turn-big-screen movies, there is some element of disappointment because its lacking certain elements but this movie has been touted as one of the best comic turned movie. Its set in sometime in the future where our technology is more advanced such as smart homes, hologram type of screens, model rendering which takes 2 seconds (as compared to the current 12 hours). It helps that Robert Downey Jr was good in his lead role of Tony Stark/Iron Man.

I enjoyed this movie because it wasn’t too out of this world with totally unrealistic CGI and weird plots. Good movie! So don’t forget to catch it in cinemas

All Max Truemont (Josh Holloway) wants is a chance to make a fresh start with his fiancee Roxanne (Sarah Wayne Callies) … but a bank loan is not easy to get when you’re a felon who’s previously been convicted of manslaughter. Max’s last resort – and only remaining choice – is to team up with two shady associates hired by an absent mastermind to kidnap the son of one of the richest women in the state. As they await ransom instructions, the group begins to turn on each other as past suspicions, betrayals and secrets inexplicability come into play. When the escalating events take a horrific turn, it soon becomes apparent to Max that the child may not be the innocent he first appeared to be.

I watched Whisper at Cineleisure after buka puasa the other day. It stars Josh Holloway – who acted as Sawyer in Lost – and Sarah Wayne Callies who acted as Dr Sara Tancredi in Prison Break. This movie is a thriller which didnt quite make the cut. Yes there was some suspense and shocking parts where I did jump in my seat, but it lacked the climaxing not *that* kinda of climax moment.

Josh Holloway seriously needs to work on his emotions face. Come on! Expressionless ok! Like a poker face. His lines all lack meaning and feeling. Sarah Callies always seems to have that deer-caught-in-headlights look. Why lahhh whyy?? I cant help thinking about her role as Sara Tincredi (and also the very yummy Wentworth Miller) – same damsel-in-distress-omg-i-need-help kind of character. But Blake Woodruf as David (the kid who got kidnapped) was superb with his haunting eyes and sharp stare.

The basic plot of the movie could be improved to be better. There should more background information about the characters and how they got to that point. And Roxanne’s role should be expanded more – she is basically just there for show in the movie, to fill in the vacancy for a female character. I guess, the only interesting twist in the storyline was the secret Rox has which is only revealed at the end of the movie.
