My two cents on the #NajibCNY issue and how they got your email (and SMS?)

Posted by on January 31, 2011  |  17 Comments

A few days ago, a couple of people received and email from our Prime Minister @NajibRazak wishing them a happy Chinese New Year. Naturally, many were concerned on where he obtain their email addresses.

At first I thought it was sent to people/bloggers who signed up for his tea parties and dinners that he has organized to meet and greet his online friends. This was not the case. Neither was it sent out to people who registered to vote.

Amanz.my (full article in BM here) later reported that the email was obtained from “media prima database and others”. This information was in fact given by the CEO of Media Prima himself @FaridRidzuan stating “Congrats! Its from our media prima database and others. He just want to reach out to as many malaysian personally from now on! Please reply to him” (source).

It’s surprising how Malaysia’s leading media investment group who owns numerous tv stations, press and radio stations could blatantly ignore or forget about confidentiality and privacy issues. Not to mention that, on the Terms of Use page of TV3, it states the following :

  • Information Use
      • The Personal Information you provide will help our team deliver user support (including processing any complaints or enquiries) and for any other purpose related to the operation of our websites, its services and its advertising.
  • Passing on Your Data to Third Parties
    • We will not sell, lease or share your Personal Information except as set forth in this Privacy Notice.

Sadly…..

For some, its not a big issue. In fact, I came across my MrKay’s facebook posting where his friend was saying or implying that its not a big deal and that we were blowing it out of proportion. In fact, she said, and i quote “if you think emel is privacy and you dont think uninvited people can send it to you…stop using email..just use snailmail.”

mrkay

My response to this was was below:

“Adda, the issue here is not about him emailing the greetings. If he emailed it to all the people who signed up for something like the Tea Party then it’s understandable how he got your email.

In this case, it’s clearly stated that it was taken from the media prima and other databases. When you sign up for these sites, they usually have a disclaimer that your info is private and will be not shared to a 3rd party.

What if other info is also shared? Your phone number? Your mailing address? Would you like to receive spam SMSes? Or tons of letters? The other question is, who else has media prima shared this information to? Other companies? Other government bodies?

According to your logic of “takyah la Pakai email”, then why be online at all? No néed to FB, chat, surf. The thing is, we can’t. Coz that’s whr the future is. Also, isn’t it ironic that the govt is pushing for maximum Internet penetration in the country when they can’t guarantee the privacy of the data?

Please Try to think Beyond your little scope and think of the implications of what this information sharing means to you and the privacy of your data.”

p/s: Urgh, I hate this “you tak suka, you keluar” mentality

Edit : 01 Feb 2010

Some update for today. Apparently some people received an SMS with NajibCNY wishes as below:

Salam 1Malaysia. Selamat Tahun Baru Cina kepada semua rakyat Malaysia. Ikhlas dari Najib Razak & keluarga. najib@1malaysia.com.my

Screenshots below from @nicklwc and @ChelsiaNg

Apparently not every mobile user received it. I’m also not sure if there is any correlation between receiving the email & receiving the SMS. Some people who received the SMS did not receive the email or vice versa. (re: @hewyk @atreyustrange @hawkstah). Some people received both (re: @nicklwc @azrinarizz @wernshen @saldali707 @spectreoutreach).

What are your thoughts on this issue?

SMS Scam Top Up RM30

Posted by on November 29, 2010  |  16 Comments

Did you know that there’s a scam going on from an international number claiming to be a loved one borrowing a friend’s phone to ask for top up to a new number?

Azri’s bro received a similar sms from the number +62 852 15790148 on 24 Nov with the SMS as per below (left pic): “Ni mak guna kad orng, tolong isikan mak top up RM30 di nombor baru mak ni no dia 0178343217,pasal mak ada kes di balai polis, Boleh tak cepat sikit kirim top up”

A few days ago, I received a similar SMS from the number +62 853 42566573 on 28 Nov with the SMS (right pic) : “Ni p’cik guna kad orng, tolng isikan p’cik top up RM30 di number baru p’cik ni nom dia 0128132863,pasal p’cik ada kes di balai polis boleh tak cepat sikit beli.”

FYI +62 is the country code for Indonesia. And when you call the listed local number, you will be directed to an indonesian language voicemail.

Here’s the list of numbers, do drop a note if you know more

  • +6285215790148 – 0178343217
  • +6285342566573 – 0128132863
  • +6285250887592 – 0128271042 (credit : Prasys)
  • +6285342566594 – 0128132863 (credit: @rognales)
  • +6285227681485 – 0128011374 (credit: lonjan)

Do be careful when getting weird messages like this. Make sure you check with the respective people. Google the number if possible and report to your local telcos about this.

For Digi numbers :
Tweet their twitter handle @Digi_telco with the number and text and they will add it to their anti-spam system. (Refer : here and here)

For Maxis numbers :
Please report any scam messages to donotdisturb@maxis.com.my (Refer : Maxis FB)

EDIT :

Happy Telco New Rates (Mahal siot!)

Posted by on January 22, 2009  |  8 Comments

For those who don’t know, Happy is a sub-telco of Digi which launched in 2007 and offers a very cheap flat rate of RM0.99 to any telco provider – including landlines (Telekom Malaysia), Maxis, Hotlink, Celcom, XPAX, UOX, SOX, UMobile & Digi. I wrote a post about it in 2007 and so did many other bloggers like MohdIsmail, Qai, Empithree, Manchurr, Mixterr & Khai.

Today, 22 January, Happy telco released its new rates. And its quite a shock to most people – in fact, I think many people are not even aware of it. Quoted from the website [Happy News],

Thursday, 22 January 2009

Happy is now HAPPIER with brand new call rates.

With Happy, you can make extra long Happy to Happy calls of up to 45 minutes anytime between 9:00am to 5:00pm for just RM0.99!

For short calls, we’re gotten even better with a super call rate of RM0.33 a minute to all networks! That’s way cheaper compared to our previous rate!

And you’ll be glad to know that SMSes are still RM0.10 to all Malaysian numbers!
The new call rates are applicable to all new and existing Happy customers. Find out more about these rates in our updated rate table and be HAPPY!

Don’t understand? Here’s a quick breakdown of the new rates

Happy to other telcos
RM0.99 for first 15 mins = RM0.06 sen/min
After 15 minutes = RM0.33/min

For Happy – Happy
Between 9am – 5pm : RM0.99 for 45 mins
Other times : RM0.33/min for less than 03 mins call

Lets do a bit of calculation. Based on the old rate, 1 call (which will get cut off after 45 minutes) is RM 0.99.

New Rate :
45 mins = 15 mins + 30 mins
= RM 0.99 + (RM0.33 x 30mins)
= RM 0.99 + RM9.90
= RM 11

That’s a 1100% INCREASE! Insane right? So are you going to stay with Happy or just let your simcard expire?

The waiting game

Posted by on April 14, 2008  |  3 Comments

I never liked to play the waiting game. It annoys me how some girls (or guys *jeling kat Z*) can just wait for their bf/gf to sms back then wonder every minute why they didn’t contact them. All kinds of things will go thru their mind, "Is he/she with someone else?", "He/she promised to call", "He/she must be busy at work…err..i think so" and then they’ll start overthinking it.

Well, today I was forced to play the waiting game. He had to work at a no-handphones-allowed place so he lent his hp with his sibling for the day. Made me promise not to call/text the whole day Sunday. Promised to call Monday in the wee hours of the morning.

Obviously he didn’t call la kan? If not I won’t be writing this post. Couldn’t sleep anyway so spent time texting my exbf (we parted as friends and besides he’s one of the very few Sarawakian friends I hv here in KL) and also making Brownie Biscuits (very easy biscuits. Recipe at Zestful Eats ). Baking is so theraputic for me. LOL!

Oh, back to the waiting game. So yea, Girls (and guy *jeling Z*) don’t bother waiting for that call/sms. Put your mind on other things that are more productive. Why? Because even if you overanalyze and think so much about it, it wont make him/her call you any faster. Plus, well most of the time you actually do realize and know the real reason why he/she didn’t call.

Like in my case, I’m pretty sure he fell asleep without remembering or perhaps tak larat to call. Ta-daaaa…simple.

p/s: If he/she doesn’t give a good reason. Then you pula give silent treatment lor, two can play at that game. LOL!
